Recommend 8 laptops for kids

Whether it’s boosting homework productivity or watching your favorite movies, here’s our first choice

Note the operating system, screen size and applications

When you buy a laptop for a child, you need to know what it is used for. Of course, this is also important when choosing adults, but it is crucial for children. Is it just an educational tool? Are you looking forward to using it to play or watch movies?

Laptops come with different operating systems: Windows, Chrome OS and Mac OS. Windows is the most common system that works with most applications. Chrome laptops are usually the cheapest, but have an operating system with fewer applications – and work best when connected to the Internet. A Chromebook uses Google’s own laptop operating system, which uses programs like Google Docs, but also some Android apps.

Windows is sometimes available in “S-mode,” which means it’s limited to apps available in the Microsoft Store. You can also cancel this if you wish it for free. Note, however, that once all Windows applications are available, they will not be able to return. After all, Apple’s macOS is probably the most intuitive to use, but Apple’s hardware is not cheap (and lacks the touchscreen that many laptops find here).

Contact your child’s school to make sure that certain programs or operating systems are not required. Screen size is the most immediate way to interact with a laptop. If your kid wants to do movies and homework, a bigger screen is better.

There is usually a triangle of compromises: weight, performance and price. One that is super light will rarely be cheap, one that is cheap will probably not be strong or light. There is a balance to be found: A slow computer can be frustrating, while a heavy laptop can be annoying when it is being dragged around.

Still, there are bargains, especially if a Chromebook is an option. Note that some of the companies, such as Apple and Microsoft, offer lower prices to educational institutions, students or parents.

Screen size: 10.6in
Storage: 64GB
Operating system: Windows 10 in S Mode

Microsoft’s Surface series of 2-in-1 convertibles (which work as hybrids of laptops and tablets) are extremely well made and powerful. This latest machine is more expensive than some here, but is extremely inexpensive and very adaptable. That’s because it works great as a tablet. It even has a stand that folds out to hold the tablet in different angles, for example, to type text or watch videos.

It’s light and powerful, has a very good battery life and more storage space than most here. Note that you want to buy a type cover that protects the screen and has a decent keyboard . There are other useful extras like a mouse and a pen.

Dell Inspiron 15 3000:

Screen size: 15.6in
Storage: 1TB
Operating system: Windows 10

If a big screen has priority, this laptop is particularly impressive for the low price. In addition, it has a huge amount of memory (1TB), so that the place in a hurry can hardly go out. The memory is more like a hard drive than the flash memory of other laptops, making it a little harder to carry (as well as the larger screen).

The Inspiron is great for watching movies due to screen size, rich colors, and good audio features. Dell allows customers to configure their laptops in great detail, so you can add a DVD drive to this laptop, for example.

Apple MacBook Air:

Screen size: 13in
Storage: 128GB
Operating system: Apple macOS

Apple’s MacBook Air broke the tool on startup because it was super light, incredibly thin and very powerful. Apple has just launched a new design model with a much better display and fingerprint sensor. If you want your kids to use Apple’s sleek operating system, this is the lowest-priced Apple laptop on the market.

Lenovo IdeaPad 120S:

Screen size: 14in
Storage: 32GB
Operating system: Windows 10

When it comes to looks, this notebook is stylish and attractive, not least because of its beautiful blue surface. It looks better than the price suggests. Although the screen resolution is not high enough to make the device outstanding, this is offset by the fact that it performs very well and the battery life is full-time.

The trackpad is great, something younger hands will enjoy as they get used to how computers work. Most expensive computers move from USB-A to smaller USB-C connectivity. This laptop also has one of these options, which increases its versatility.

Dell Chromebook 11 3180:

Screen size: 11.6in
Storage: 32GB
Operating system: Chrome OS

This laptop screen is only 11.6 inches tall, but it should be fine for homework. A leak-proof keyboard is a real bonus and provides more safety, as well as the reasonably robust and rubberized bumper that runs along the edges and bottom to survive a fall. A narrow white bar on the lid of the notebook is a three-color lamp that can be used in a classroom for a child to tell the teacher that he needs help – like a digital version of the hand lift.

The screen can be opened up to 180 degrees, so it can be folded flat to share content with multiple people. Incidentally, the screen is made of Corning Gorilla Glass to make it more resistant, with added scratch protection.

Apple MacBook Air :

Screen size: 13.3in
Storage: 128GB
Operating system: Apple macOS

If you want your kid to have the best computer available, it’s probably a Mac laptop. However, if the new MacBook Air is too expensive, last year’s model is still available at an honestly outstanding price. It’s still much more than other laptops, but it has a massive 128GB of storage. This is ideal if you want to have many movies on board.

It’s very fast, has a backlit display, which is very useful in darker rooms and the battery life is as good as any other laptop – full 12 hours. It lacks the high-resolution display of the new MacBook Air, and there is no Touch ID fingerprint sensor. This is a lightweight, powerful laptop that is solidly built and fun.

HP Stream 11-y050sa:

Screen size: 11.6in
Storage: 32GB
Operating system: Windows 10

This is a particularly affordable Windows laptop, especially since the price includes a one-year subscription to Office 365. The screen is small and neither high-resolution nor as bright as in the test, which is suitable for everyone watching movies is a priority.

Still, it’s easy and pretty thin. It also has a very good battery life, easily eight hours. The design is stylish: blue inside and out (apart from the white keyboard).

Acer Spin 1:

Screen size: 11.6in
Storage: 64GB
Operating system: Windows 10

Spin 1 is very flexible. Literally, thanks to the 360-degree hinge, you can use it in four different configurations: normal laptop, tablet, tent (where it looks like an inverted V) and display (screen at the back, keyboard hidden behind it). The touch-sensitive 11.6-inch screen is attractive and bright.

Both the keyboard and the trackpad are accessible and comfortable to use. The battery life is sufficient and this is a good value for a convertible PC.

The verdict: laptops for children

Screen size is important. If 11.6 inches are enough, the Dell Chromebook 11 3180 is a solid buy. By far the best laptops are the Apple MacBook Air models, but also the most expensive ones. The Microsoft Surface Go offers a good balance between value, size, weight and battery life.
